Reap the benefits that volunteering abroad can bring

Increasingly, more and more people of all ages are taking off to the farthest corners of the world to lend their services to worthwhile causes. Whether they are taking some time out before university, hoping to build on their transferable skills, or simply off in search of a new cultural adventure, they understand that volunteering abroad can provide them with unforgettable memories and a huge sense of achievement. Volunteering provides a unique chance to give something back to the world whilst simultaneously allowing you to learn about yourself and other cultures.

With so many life-enhancing projects out there to get involved in, it can be difficult to know where to start! Fortunately, with the expansion of the gap year volunteer market there are many organisations and resources on hand to help point you in the right direction.  The most important thing is to decide what kind of volunteering project you are looking for. Although it is undoubtedly an exciting and enlightening experience, volunteering means working hard for little or no pay far from home, so you need to be sure that you are passionate and enthusiastic about the project you choose. Draw on your particular fascination with a place, and make sure your personal and career interests inform your choice.

Once you have decided on your area of interest, you can start looking at volunteer organisations that facilitate programmes in your field of interest. There are numerous projects out there available, and whilst it may take some time, it is worth doing careful research to ensure you make the right choice. Volunteer programmes can vary greatly in cost, so check that the company is reputable, and make sure that you know exactly what work will be involved and what the money you pay for your trip will cover.  Many companies will not, for example, cover the cost of travel to your destination.

Now that you have found the perfect project, it’s important to make sure you are fully prepared for your life-changing adventure.  Read up as much as you can on the country you have chosen so that you know exactly what to expect in terms of the different culture and climate. Get any essential items you may need well in advance so that you don’t feel too rushed as your trip nears. Above all make sure you are fully insured before leaving the country. The type of cover you will need will depend greatly on what you are planning to do, so make sure any holiday insurance policy you do take out will cover you for any risky activities you may be undertaking. To keep costs down, it’s worth taking a look at sites such as AA Travel Insurance, who offer good value holiday insurance.

Once you are all packed and ready to go you can start concentrating on joining the thousands of other people around the world who have been lucky enough to partake in such a rewarding and fulfilling experience!
