Experience:

Organisation:

Name: Gillian
Hometown: Vancouver, Canada
Destination: Ghana
Project type: General Teaching Assistant
Organisation: Gap Activity Projects (now called Lattitude)
What were your impressions of your destination?
Ghana is a country that you both love and hate at the exact same time. The people are both endearing and irritating, but I wouldn't change this experience for the world!
Was the work interesting and challenging?
The work was rather boring, just reading out of a textbook. It's hard to animate classes when there are no resources whatsoever. The weekend trips we took independently were really fun.
What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?
The accommodation in our village was pretty basic, no running water, little electricity, but we had a decent room. I felt comfortable and welcome in our village, but the people never let you forget you were different.
Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?
I was very happy with the in-country staff (as well as my organizer in Canada).
Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?
Yes I do, but the in-country staff were not paid, so I wonder where all my money is going?
Would you recommend the project to others?
Yes
