Project type: Working for a company who look after HIV/Aids victims

What were your impressions of your destination?

I had a great time in Mauritius and really enjoyed my experience. It is green and lush with beautiful beaches. Being a small island it was easy to explore during my days off. Your money will go along way here. I wouldn't suggest staying in Port Louis though near the office... the city pretty much clears out after 6pm.. Most people reside in the surrounding suburbs or beach villages. I took a 45 minute bus ride most days which cost me 60p.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

I got to work in the office and out in the field. Very interesting and challenging work, meeting local towns people and villagers and seeing how they lived. They were so pleased to see volunteers. It would be helpful to speak some French though.

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

Gap and Career Breaks managed to find me a family to stay with. This was great as it not only helped me improve my French but I got my meals cooked for me, and this was included in the price. The family were just lovely. We will be friends now forever.

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

The staff were extremely flexible, helpful and open (and they spoke English). It was a pleasure to work in such a positive environment and I think we all benefited. I booked through Gap and Career Breaks and nothing was too much trouble for them, I would recommend them to anyone.

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

Indeed I do.

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
