Name: Daniel

Hometown: Tweed Heads

Destination: South Africa

Project type: Care work with children with disabilities

Organisation: Gap Activity Projects (now called Lattitude)

What were your impressions of your destination?

South Africa is more beautiful than I could ever have imagined, and Cape Town, where I was based, is in my opinion the most beautiful city in the world. The natural beauty of the land, the wondeful mix of cultures, and the awesome backpacking routes are unsurpassed by anywhere I have ever been.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

Most definitely, and it was infinitely rewarding. Have never worked in a caring role before, and not had much exposure to people with disabilities, there was so much personal development in it for me I came back happier than I had ever been before in my life, after meeting all these kids with the most amazing personalities and stories.

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

The accommodation was in the hostel where the kids stayed at night. It was fairly basic (I was based in one of the townships) but I felt very welcome all the time, I had my own room/toilet/shower etc, and the people in the community were all very friendly and looked out for us.

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

Extremely. They couldn't have done a better job.

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

For sure.

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
