Name: Frances

Hometown: London

Destination: Liuzhou, China

Project type: Teaching English

Organisation: Gap Activity Projects (now called Lattitude)

What were your impressions of your destination?

I loved China. Liuzhou was an industrial town in the south of China full of interesting and friendly people. It was interesting to see a country in such a massive transition period, modern China was literally being built around us.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

I was teaching classes of about 60 teenagers and at times it was probably the hardest thing I've had to do, but simultaneously the most rewarding. We were given a textbook to teach from which meant we had a structure to teach around but we could also make up loads of our lessons when we wanted.

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

I had a little flat with a balcony and a gorgeous view all to myself which was amazing. The gatekeeper to our little complex was one of the most lovely people out there and when we sat around outside she'd come and give us fruit. It was the little things like that that made the whole stay so much more comfortable.

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

The TEFL course GAP arranged for us really helped give me the confidence to stand up in front of my first class. Our link teachers out there were also amazing. Aki, my teacher, was one of the sweetest people ever and never minded helping us with all our little troubles.

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

Definitely.

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
