Name: Sophie

Hometown: Hobart

Destination: Vanuatu

Project type: Full time teacher of Maths and English Literature

Organisation: Gap Activity Projects (now called Lattitude)

What were your impressions of your destination?

I was on a little island called Pentecost. It was very remote, lush, tropical and coconutty. It also had big hills.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

The work was challenging - trying to control a class of 30 when you're only 18! But it was interesting and very rewarding. Activities: snorkelling, walking 30km one day in flip flops/thongs, "storying", eating rice and more rice :P

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

My accommodation was very rural and basic. We were lucky because we had a flushing toilet and running water. But there were times when we had to wash in the sea because there was no water left (dry season). We had a generator for 2-3 hours at night. Phone lines were dodgy - but again, we were lucky because there were 2 phones in our area, normally there are one or none.

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

Yes

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

Yes

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
