Name: Marie
Hometown: Hull
Destination: Kenya
Project type: Community work
Organisation: Gap and Career Breaks
What were your impressions of your destination?
Definately a culture shock although the people of Kenya are just adorable, friendly and so pleased to have volunteers come and help them to be independent. They are so respectful of everyone.
Was the work interesting and challenging?
I chose to do 2 different projects to get a variety of work. And luckily they where located not too far away from each other in the north west of Kenya. I worked in an orphange for 4 weeks, oh boy I left my heart with those kids, I could have brought them all home. They are so happy but they have nothing. I then worked with a group where I got to choose what I did, I could do a few days with a community then go off to a school where they look after and teach children with disabilities, if you want a humbling experience this is it! There was a lot more to chose from too. Both projects challenged and streched me beyond what I thought I was capable of. I have most certainly come back a better person.
What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?
It would be hard not to feel comfortable with Kenyan people. Accommodation is very basic in Kenya but once you get over this (and you do) the accommodation is not important.
Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?
Both project staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Gap and Career Breaks in the UK were fab, they were patient with me as it was my first gap experience and answering any silly question or query that I had before I travelled, I cannot recommend them highly enough.
Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?
Most certainly.
Would you recommend the project to others?
Yes
