Name: Siobhain

Hometown: London

Destination: Madagascar

Project type: Teaching English

Organisation: The Dodwell Trust

What were your impressions of your destination?

It was certainly a culture shock but one I enjoyed very much. The people are friendly and welcoming. I made lots of friends and mixed with the locals enjoying traditional meals and parties together. There are many beautiful places to visit such as the tropical rainforests and deserted beaches but it is a third world country and it is so different, but such an experience, to live like a local in the small villages or in the capital and take in the malagasy culture.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

The work was both challenging and rewarding and I enjoyed every moment of it. You get to teach both adults and children if you want, which I did, and they all really want to learn and co-operate during the lessons. I got to know them all very well and was very sad to leave but I definitely felt like I had achieved something and made a difference.

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

The accommodation was very nice and much better than I had expected before going out there. I lived with four other girls who I have since became very good friends with. Everything you really need is supplied...obviously it's not luxurious but that's the fun part!!

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

I was very happy with the organisation and the staff. Everything I had expected from them I got. I didn't actually see them very often when I was in my placement which I actually prefered because I just got on with what I was there for but of course there was a host from the organisation who lived in the village so I could go to see her if I had any problems, which I didn't. She was very nice and invited me around her house for dinner with her family.

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

Definitely!

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
