Name: Ben

Hometown: Wimborne, Dorset

Destination: Belize, Guatamala and USA

Project type: Conservation, Davis Falls Project

Organisation: Trekforce Worldwide

What were your impressions of your destination?

I was living for five weeks in a hammock in a camp within the jungle of Belize. It was a very cool atmosphere, a little daunting to think of, but after the training more fun than anything else. The waterfall site was beautiful, and the whole area around me was so surreal.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

The Davis Falls project consisted of building two Palapas, one 25 ft bridge and 5 footbridges. This all went towards the approach to the waterfall which was the centrepiece of the proposed National park. Other work consisted of transects into the surrounding forest in search of tree types, fauna and Mayan ruins. The work was very varied, and extremely hard. The rain never stopped us, neither did the bugs.

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

Accommodation was a personal thing. We all put up our own hammocks, and set them to our own taste. Very comfortable after a hard days work, as we fell straight asleep. Other than that any extra accommodation during travel was fine, suitable for a backpacking journey really.

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

More than happy, I couldn't have had a better team supporting me throughout my trip. Leaders and Medics alike, all brilliant and really caring.

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

My project in comparison to others available was quite expensive, but once I had finished I was more than happy with the value for money.

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
