Destination: Tanzania

Project type: Peer Educator of Sexual Health Issues

Organisation: Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW)

What were your impressions of your destination?

The programme was based in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. The area was lush and green with stunning scenery. The people were friendly and welcoming.

Was the work interesting and challenging?

The work was highly challenging as we were dealing with very sensitive issues. My Tanzanian counterpart and I would organise events in the community and schools which would always be fun and interesting.

What was your accommodation like? Did you feel comfortable and welcome at all times?

My accommodation was basic, with no electricity or running water. I felt very comfortable though because I was living like everyone else in the village and so gaining more respect and trust which enables us to do our job more effectively.

Were you happy with the organisation and the staff that were responsible for you during your stay?

As part of the project we were partnered with a Tanzanian volunteer. My partner was very helpful in familiarising me with the culture and language. The head office was about 8 hours away but they were always supporting us in our work. The staff at the school I was working in were very friendly and welcoming.

Do you feel that you got value for money on the project?

The project was excellent value for money. I spent 9 months in Tanzania and paid the same amount of money as many organisations ask for on projects of just 3 months.

Would you recommend the project to others?

Yes
